What is parameter continuation?

Many important problems in mathematics, science and engineering contain parameters. It is then desirable to understand the set of solutions as the parameters are varied. For nonlinear equilibrium or steady-state problems Numerical Continuation Methods are a very powerful way to do this. In our group we use this approach extensively in our modelling of the mechanical properties of small DNA molecules.
